Trayvon Martin Case

SANFORD, Fla. – The “Not Guilty” verdict of the killing of Trayvon Martin has caused mass hysteria across the nation. After 16 hours of jury deliberation concluded that based on the law, within the last 45 seconds of the physical altercation between Martin and Zimmerman; Zimmerman felt that his life was in immediate danger and had no other choice but to defend himself which led to the death of Martin.

There have been many speculations about what really took place on the night of February 26, 2012. We have heard the 911 recordings that would suggest that Zimmerman should have never exited his car in pursuit of Martin in which he should have waited on the local authorities to arrive. But a question that cannot be answered because Zimmerman was not crossed examined is what was really going on inside the head of George Zimmerman.

There have been many questions asked, but they have all been asked in question of Zimmerman’s actions. What was the real cause of the seemingly unnecessary shooting of Martin? Was Zimmerman actions motivated by racism? Did his actions stem from his civic duty to keep his neighborhood safe? Profiling? or Hatred of young black teenagers? What would have happened if Zimmerman had announced or revealed his gun to Martin? Would that have de-escalated the situation until the police arrived? And what about Martin’s role is this tragic event? What no one has asked themselves was could Martin have handled the incident any differently? What if Martin would have run away and found safety? Is it possible that Martin could have been the aggressor in the confrontation that was initiated by Zimmerman? Could this situation have been avoided? Should Trayvon have called the police and kept them on the phone while in verbal confrontation with Zimmerman? If both individuals were scared and feared for their lives who is to say what is the appropriate response to a seemingly life threatening situation.

The facts remain that a young teenager was killed and based on the law Zimmerman was found not guilty, which does not suggest that he is innocent. The law states that, “Beyond a reasonable doubt” is the highest standard of proof prosecutors face in American criminal courts. It means the jurors believe there is no other logical explanation for what happened than the defendant is guilty. If faced with two plausible explanations for what happened, jurors are supposed to acquit.”

“The danger facing George Zimmerman need not have been actual; however, to justify the use of deadly force, the appearance must have been so real that a reasonably cautious and prudent person would have believed the danger could be avoided only through the use of that force.” The prosecution could not prove Zimmerman’s actions otherwise.

In addition, the use of the Stand Your Ground provision of Florida’s self-defense law at the murder trial of George Zimmerman. Although the provision was not invoked by defense lawyers either before the trial or as part of their trial strategy, it was included in the judge’s instructions to the jury. Still the facts remain Martin is dead and Zimmerman is acquitted of all criminal charges. There are three sides to every story, George Zimmerman’s, Trayvon Martin’s, and the absolute truth. Unfortunately Martin will never get the chance to tell his side of the story on the courses of events that have led to that fatal night.

Senseless shootings, killings, and murders happen every day in America, many of which go unnoticed because in urban neighborhoods this is often times common place. This case gained national attention due to the fact that a non-black man killed a black teenager in what appeared to be ruthless cold-blood. But when teenagers kill other teenagers it’s chalked up as another killing. This is definitely without question catastrophic for the parents and family of Trayvon Martin and it has impacted and affected millions of people from all walks of life, races, genders, and ethnicities across the nation. This case is long from over, speculations of bringing a federal civil lawsuit is currently at the forefront. However, moving forward, the question at hand that we all must ponder is what can we do to prevent something like this from happening again?
